In 1926 Herman Charles Bosman, one of South Africa's most popular short story writers, was condemned to death after a catastrophic incident in which his stepbrother was killed. On the judge's recommendation, his sentence was commuted to four years with hard labour. So at the age of 21 Bosman went to serve his term of imprisonment with hard labour.
