Die klim van 'n berg is amper soos die lewenspad. Sonder om nou te erg filosofies te raak – jy staan onder in die vlak en voetheuwels met jou lewe voor jou. Dan pak jy hom aan. Dit gaan gepaard met stampe en stote en swaar. Daar's ook heerlike oomblikke – as jy rus en terugkyk na die pad waarlangs jy gevorder het. Maar ewig wink die kruin, en met hernieude krag stu jy opwaarts... Die maklik begaanbare wee hou vir Johan Bakkes geen aantrekkingskrag nie; nee, vir hom altyd maar die smalle wee wat met bloedsweet gepaardgaan. Daar waar min ander dit nog gewaag het. Norrevok, so wil gerugte dit he, is 'n klein ou dorpie net anderkant Novisibirsk in Siberie. Daar waar dit rerig koud raak, soos in minus-40-grade-koud. Maar as jou naam Bakkes is, is die woord norrevok min of meer sinoniem met "nooit boedel oorgee nie ... Mettertyd bied Nepal, Pakistan en Ethiopie net nie meer genoeg van 'n uitdaging nie, en dan neem jou reise jou na toenemend vreemde plekke, daar waarheen die gewone toeris nie graag gaan nie, daar waar net die plaaslike inwoners hul eie taal verstaan. Niks Engels . . . en nog minder Afrikaans. Maar deur Afrikaans te brabbel en totaal dolli inkapas te pleit, help darem dat mens nie van die Trans-Siberiese trein afgegooi word nie. En met gebaretaal en akteursvernuf kan 'n ou 'n redelike ent kom; as jy byvoorbeeld in Sjina soos 'n mal koei moe en met jou hande bokant jou kop horings naboots en 'n denkbeeldige matador bestorm, kan jy darem keer dat iets aan jou voorgesit word wat eens die naam "Wagter" kon gehad het.

New: Exactly as it says.
As New: Pretty much new but shows small signs of having been read; inside it will be clean without any inscriptions or stamps; might contain a remainder mark.
Very Good: Might have some creases on the spine; no hard cracks; maybe slight forward lean and short inscription inside; perhaps very minor bumping on the corners of the book; inside clean but the page edges might be slightly yellowed.
Good: A few creases on the spine, perhaps a forward lean, bumping on corners or shelfwear; maybe an inscription inside or some shelfwear or a small tear or two on the dustjacket; inside clean but page edges might be somewhat yellowed.
Fair: In overall good condition, might have a severe forward lean to the spine, an inscription, bumping to corners; one or two folds on the covers and yellowed pages; in exceptional cases these books might contain some library stamps and stickers or have neat sticky tape which was used to fix a short, closed tear.
Poor: We rarely sell poor condition books, unless the books are in demand and difficult to find in a better condition. Poor condition books are still perfect for a good read, all pages will be intact and none threatening to fall out; most probably a reading copy only.
